Ken Ikeda's music is crystalline. Tzuki (Moon) is made from shards of crystal, delicately chiseled and assembled into skeletons of songs. And then, it feels as if the crystal liquefied and became water, since nothing is strong enough to apply pressure on it: songs drift by, a gentle melody accompanied by undercurrents of backward notes.6/

The second album from Japanese sound sculptor Ken Ikeda, Merge originally surfaced in via the ever-reliable Touch imprint. The music on Merge stems from what Ikeda termed his "Sound Diary", a daily log of fragmented improvisational documents capturing the artist's everyday life in sound. There's probably a greater depth of texture on this album to its predecessor Tzuki, with the droning.

For his latest album Ken Ikeda sets aside what he terms as "techno-ish sine waves" instead favouring the more organically wrought timbres associated with close and attentive listening to everyday domestic sounds. What makes Ikeda's music so unique is the manner of his relationship with these sorts of sounds: he uses a handmade instrument made from wood and rubber to engage with the naturally.
